Hello! Another Friday is here and that means one thing... Playlist Friday here on the blog. It's Friday, June 4th, 2021. I hope your week has gone well. If not... onward and upward. One day at a time.
Summer means one thing in Houston... hot, swampy, humid, sweaty and sludgy and I was like... "I should make the first Playlist Friday of June that as well". So I went on a self designated homework assignment this week to find bands that resemble that mold that I didn't know before or wasn't super familiar with.
My favorite sludgy-ish, doom/space-ish, stoner rock type band is Cloakroom. I love, love, love Cloakroom. 2016 was the worst year of my life and I would listen to Cloakroom pretty religiously. It was a sense of normalcy during that time listening to their Further Out album.
The first 4 songs on this week's playlist all have elements of emo, sludge, grit and grime to them. Sometimes not all at the same time, but it is spread throughout. For the 5th song I went with Pond's "Sweep Me Off My Feet" which is totally unrelated to the genres of the first four songs, but it makes me want to dance and I enjoy it very much so I included it. Metaphorically I guess it could be seen as a little rainbow after a rainstorm. A little reprieve from the darkness.
An interesting tidbit I learned that I didn't know before when I was listening to these bands this week... was that Zack Shwartz of The Spirit of the Beehive fame was in Glocca Morra. I was looking the band up for more info and I was like "this guy looks like the guy in Spirit of the Beehive" and sure enough. The band disbanded in 2015 and it looks like Shwartz has shot down any chance of a reconciliation, but their music lives on and I still have to listen to a lot of it. I'm intrigued to hear more.
I appreciate you reading. Until next time.
